EURO NEWS

By Per-Ake Persson

On September 26 at the Max Schmeling Hall in Berlin (pictured) Sauerland Event will stage a big show celebrating its 35th anniversary (in Germany that is). Headlining is WBA interim welter champ Jack Culcay (20-1) against an opponent to be announced. In the co-feature supermiddle Tyron Zeuge (17-0) is rumored to take on Eduard Gutknecht (28-3-1). Since Bulgarian heavyweight Kubrat Pulev (20-1) is to participate in the press conference announcing the show it´s an educated guess that he will fight on the undercard in his first fight since losing to Wladimir Klitschko.

On September 26 1980 Wilfried Sauerland, a wealthy businessman, decided to venture into professional boxing in Germany - at the time very far from the lucrative days that would come. Headlining was middleweight Frank Wissenbach (31-2-1) vs Eddie Smith (23-9-1). As it was Wissenbach was counted out in the third but Smith was dq.d as it was ruled the knockout blow was below the belt. Also on the bill was Chisanda Mutti, who would go on to fight likes of Lee Roy Murphy (the famous double knockdown fight) and Rickey Parker for the IBF title.

Sauerland continued to promote shows all through the 80’s but it wasn’t until the iron curtain fell and East German lightheavy Henry Maske turned pro in 1990 that professional boxing in Germany took off.

****************************

Kevin Satchell (14-0) has been stripped of the EBU flyweight title as he never returned a signed contract for the oft-postponed fight against mandatory challenger Thomas Masson (13-3-1). The fight was first on for France July 18, then moved to London July 24 and it was then back to France with September 12 as date.

Masson will now face highest available contender on September 12 and don’t be too surprised if the touted Vincent Legrand (16-0) and reigning EU champ) accept the challenge.

****************************

Lenny Daws (30-3-2) have Ruben Nieto (16-1) as co-Challenger for the vacant EBU superlight title. The EBU are now calling for purse bids that expires September 10.

The title was left vacant by Michele Di Rocco.
