The father and trainer of American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is hopeful that his son will honor his word and stay retired, noting that the undefeated fighter has nothing left to achieve in the sport. The elder Mayweather was in his son's corner when the American defeated Andre Berto via unanimous decision to hike his boxing record to 49-0. Mayweather has repeatedly said that it would be the last fight of a professional career that lasted 19 years.
In a recent interview with Boxing Scene, Mayweather Sr. said his son has done everything that can be done, beaten all champions, and won a tremendous amount of money.
"All of them top guys, he beat all of them," he said. "What is he supposed to do – go back and beat them again?"
"Boxing don't go like that," he added. "When you get to a certain stat, my son already broke all the stats. There ain't nothing left for thim to do, but fight when he want to fight."
"All everyone in boxing wants today is a bunch of money, and he got all that, so what else? It ain't like he got a little money. He got a whole bunch of money."
There are some who believe that Mayweather will fight at least one more time to try and reach a 50-0 record, or one better than the record that he matched – that of Rocky Marciano.
Mayweather Sr. acknowledged that he cannot make decisions for his son – "He's a grown man," he said – but his position on the matter is crystal clear.
"I know what I would do," he said, "I would walk away, because ain't nothing to prove."
