GONZALEZ AND VILORIA SQUARE OFF IN A TERRIFIC FIGHT

Viloria goes for Gonzalez's title

Fil-Am puncher Brian Viloria is gunning for two birds with just one stone when he faces Nicaraguan heavy-hitter Roman Gonzalez on Oct. 17 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

While he will be risking his World Boxing Council flyweight title, the 28-year-old Gonzalez will also be dangling his lofty ranking as The Ring magazine’s pound-for-pound throne come fight night.

Gonzalez was installed as The Ring’s recipient of the mythical title following the retirement of Floyd Mayweather.

But dethroning Gonzalez, who has a menacing 43-0 win-loss card with 37 KOs, is going to be tough as the South American is a seasoned campaigner and the owner of a pair of iron fists.

The Gonzalez-Viloria slugfest will serve as the main supporting bout to the headlining Kazakh wunderkind Gennady Golovkin, who puts his world middleweight diadem on the line.

Viloria, whose parents are from Ilocos Sur, is in the thick of training at the Wild Card in Hollywood and has promised to put on a show of force.

Before winning the WBC 112-lb title, Gonzalez reigned as minimumweight (105 lbs) and light-fly (108 lbs) champion, making him a three-division titleholder.

Viloria, 34, will parade a 36-4 slate with 22 KOs, in what could be his final crack at the big time.
