Gary Russell Jr. stops Oscar Escandon by TKO in home debut

Near the end of the seventh round, Russell caught Escandon with a right to the temple that made him woozy. Escandon, who had also been knocked down in the third round, wobbled around on rubber legs for a few seconds, then dropped to one knee as Russell came in for the big finish. Before that could happen, referee Harvey Dock, not liking what he saw in Escandon's eyes, stopped it at 59 seconds of the seventh round.

Russell Jr., who was fighting for the first time in 13 months — this fight was postponed for two months after Escandon suffered a back injury — retained his WBC title and improved to 28-1 with 17 KOs. Escandon fell to 25-3 (17 KOs).

Gary Russell Jr. successfully defended his WBC featherweight title for the second time with an eighth-round TKO of Oscar Escandon in the main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing card in Oxon Hill, Maryland, on Saturday.

In the first round, Escandon looked tough but overwhelmed by Russell’s handspeed, particularly in the form of the laser-guided uppercuts that repeatedly snuck in from below. In the second he turned that toughness into offense, though, and the now-energized firefight evened out a little. A little.

Gary Russell, JR Stops Oscar Escandon in 7 to Defend his WBC Featherweight Strap

Tonight, at the MGM located at the National Harbor once again brought us outstanding and dramatic action via Showtime. Here’s how the action went down.

In the main event “Mister” Gary Russell, JR., 28-1, 17 KO’s, faced off against Oscar Escandon, 25-3, 17 KO’s. Russell, JR., started off quick in his fight with Escandon as he peppered him with shots throughout the first round showing his blazing speed and skill. It was business as usual for Russell, JR., in the second round as he was able to land several good body shots on Escandon. Escandon continued to press though Russell, JR., was clearly more effective. Russell, JR., caught escandon with a hard overhand right and dropped him to start the third round. Escandon was able to answer the count, though on wobbly legs. As the round ensued, Russell, JR., was able to land a barrage of heavy shots that continuously hurt Escandon who was miraculously able to make it through the end of the round.

From the MGM National Harbor “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr. (28-1, 17 KOs) had a successful homecoming in front of a nearly sold out crowd as he defended his WBC Featherweight World title with a seventh-round stoppage against the very tough, strong-willed Colombian Oscar Escandon (25-3, 17 KOs) in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

Russell Jr. took control of the action from the outset, peppering the shorter Escandon at will and dropping him in the third.

However, the brave Escandon fought his way back into the fight in the fourth and fifth stanzas, but Russell stormed into the seventh, battering the hurt Escandon and dropping him early, causing referee Harvey Dock to stop the fight at the 0:59 mark of the round (Click HERE to watch the TKO).
