Adrien Broner stops Gavin Rees in the fifth round

Adrien Broner overcame adversity as he faced Gavin Rees who surprisingly came in looking impressive for the first round of the fight at least.
In the first two round, Rees worked Broner’s body and with several short and snealy left hooks was able to win the first two round on most people’s scorecards.

Even with a great game plan by team Rees, Broner was able to adjust and in the third round and began there began to find his desirable range from where he could land punches more often and accurately.

As they headed into the fourth round, Rees was still confident, but Broner’s superior speed and boxing ability was starting to clearly show. With huge uppercuts and straight lead rights, Broner was now in complete control of the fight and having fun doing so.

In the fourth round, Broner started to put a final mark on the fight by dropping Rees with a quick right uppercut. Rees got up from the punch and survived the round but his confident was clearly a lot lower now. As Rees sat at the stool heading into the fifth, his trainer thought about stopping the fight but the big hearted Rees demanded he didn’t.

As the fifth round began, Broner’s demeanor and confident was sky high and rightfully so. Still, Rees came out strong once again swinging and determined to stay in the fight, Broner had other plans in mind.

Finally in the fifth, Broner pressed the fight even further and Rees started to demolish. At the 2:59 mark of the round, Ree’s trainer had seen enough and threw in the towel to save his fighter from further punishment.

In the end, the performance by Broner was impressive, especially the fact that he overcame the adversity that Rees presented in the first two round. For most young up and coming fighters, the ability to overcome adversity is something that most of the lack. Fortunately for Broner, he’s no ordinary talent, he’s a superb one and continues to show it every time he steps under the HBO spotlight.

When asked what was next for him, Broner simply said, "I'm still the can-man, anybody can get it." Lets hope so.

Rees goes under at the Boardwalk

BRAVE Gavin Rees was dismantled by Adrien Broner as the cocky American retained his WBC title.

Rees, 32, gave his all attempting to rip the world lightweight crown from Broner’s grasp at the iconic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

But the Welshman was floored twice before trainer Gary Lockett threw in the towel in round five to save his man from more punishment.

Broner, who showed a total lack of respect in the build-up to the fight, finally sent some praise his opponent’s way after stretching his unbeaten run to 26 fights.

The 23-year-old said: “I knew coming into the bout he was going to come to fight. I had to see how much gas was in that little Toyota he was pushing.

“It’s all about levels. If they go up one, I’ll go up two. I’m sorry I didn’t give my fans much to see.

“I love to have fun and I love to entertain.

“It was two world-class fighters fighting and we put on a great show. He’s tough as steak that’s been cooked too long.

“Man, I landed the uppercut and down he went! I could tell he was underwater – look at the body shot.

“But my best shot is when somebody takes a picture of me! Go on, take that picture!”

Rees arguably won the first two rounds courtesy of a spirited workrate as he took the fight to the champ.

Broner gradually began to pick him off, countering with a vicious left hook.

But the partisan crowd warmed to the challenger and he continued to march forward before getting pinned on the ropes at the end of round three.

Broner continued to display his power in the fourth, flooring Rees with a right uppercut.

It was a heavy knockdown but Rees was quickly back to his feet and he managed to make it to the bell despite a vicious flurry.

Broner remained untroubled, with a stinging body shot putting Rees down again in the next session.

The title-holder stepped on the gas and it came as no surprise when Lockett took evasive action with just a second of the round remaining.

A disappointed Rees said: “I made a lot of mistakes. My skill set is a lot better than that.

“Fair play, for a lightweight he hits very hard. He caught me and that was the end of it.

“I’m a warrior, I’m always going to get back up. I’d have carried on but I knew the game was done.

“He’s the best I’ve been in with and is a world champion for a reason. I’ve never been dealt with like that before.”

With Rees out of the way, Broner is keen to face WBO boss Ricky Burns in a unification clash.

And he wasted little time in throwing down the gauntlet to Burns and his promoter Frank Warren.

Broner, who had earlier claimed he had never heard of the Scot, said: “Speaking of Ricky Burns – he’ll get burned up. I just want to fight him.

“I’ll step up in weight if the Burns fight doesn’t happen next.”

Gavin Rees was never anything less than heroic here in the fabled Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall last night, but courage was never going to be enough to wrench the WBC world lightweight title from the grasp of Adrien Broner.
The little man from Wales failed to solve The Problem, which is what the flashy American likes to call himself.
Rees was down twice before being stopped with only one second remaining in the fifth round.

But he did enough to raise question marks about the American's presumption of being the new Floyd Mayweather.
That he is not, at least not yet.
At least Rees, in sustaining only the second defeat of his 40 fight career, gave a creditable account of himself.
Both men weighed in more than a stone heavier than they were at Friday's weigh-in.
This was a reminder that Rees won his previous world title.

The extra poundage looked to have settled a little more heavily on the significantly shorter Rees. Broner, by contrast, simply looked just as muscular as usual, but even bigger.
The quiet Welshman made a quiet entrance to the ring but the flamboyant Broner made his entrance with a microphone set on his head, singing his own rap theme tune.
But it was Rees who made the brighter start, he crouched even lower and evaded Broner's quick jabs while landing some snappy counters with both his left and right hands.
Broner won this WBC belt here in this fabled Boardwalk Hall in November and is a popular figure in the area. So maybe the judges gave him the first round, but not me.

Broner seemed to have listened, the first round was a wake-up call and he had Rees in trouble early in the second.
Two big rights had Rees staggering slightly and more followed. The flashy American was premature in assuming it was going to be easy from then on but although Rees rallied in the final minute, he lost the round.
Rees is renowned for the granite chin from which he takes his nickname The Rock, and he proved it by taking a couple more heavy shots in the third but he hadn't come only to survive and his flurries of crisp punches seemed to confuse Broner momentarily.
The American then set himself.

Rees was the busier fighter but Broner the more dangerous and midway through the fourth, the Cincinnati kid landed his trademark right uppercut to dump the challenger on the seat of his shorts.
Rees rose unsteadily but although Broner went for the kill and might at one point have encouraged referee Earl Brown to intervene, Rees gamely battled through to the bell.
Rees' girlfriend Kayleigh looked distressed as her man began to take something of a beating and, temporarily, left her seat at ringside. Rees, however, again came out busy in the fifth, clipping Broner with some snappy hooks from either hand.
Broner shook his head to deny they had any effect but when he landed another huge right Rees simply spread his arms wide and laughed at him.

A furious exchange followed, with Rees giving Broner a harder fight than clearly he had expected. But when he went down again from a left to the body, the referee overruled his appeal for a low blow and administered another eight-count.
Gamely, once again, Rees returned to the fray with heroic will only to run into a fusilade of punches from the champion.
As Rees reeled, his trainer Gary Lockett waved the white towel furiously in the corner and Mr Brown stopped it to spare him further punishment.
It made Rees all the more distraught that there was only one second remaining in the round but it was a sensible end to a spirited, gallant performance. He was heading for hiding.
