DeGale stops Demers in second round as Brit eyes world title shot this year

James Degale flew under the radar last night to claim a 15th professional victory - and 10th knockout - against Sebastien Demers in Quebec.

The 2008 Olympic champion was fighting for the first time since December after his proposed clash with Alexander Brand was called off at short notice in March.

And the super middleweight made light work of Canadian Demers who was returning to the ring after a two-year absence.

Degale, 27, has set his sights on finally earning a world title shot having been hampered by inactivity throughout his career.

Demers meanwhile had lost his last three fights before taking a break from the sport but had previously challenged Arthur Abraham for the IBF world middleweight title.

The 33-year-old was only announced as the opponent for what was a low-key event earlier in the week and Degale was on the offensive from the first bell, landing solidly with the jab and the uppercut.

Demers was rocked up another uppercut in the second session and it was the same shot from the left hand that forced him to take a knee before the referee stepped in.

'I wasn't messing around,' Degale said. 'I got in there and he felt too slow and I could see the shots coming so I opened up on him

'The finishing shot was a nice uppercut. We've been working on the inside and I'm learning in the gym every day.

'Give me a couple more fights to keep the momentum going and I'm willing to fight anyone.

'I will be a world champion by the end of this year.'
