Injuries
Haye defeated Nikolay Valuev to win the WBA title in 2009 before surrendering the belt to Wladimir Klitschko when they fought in Hamburg two years later.
Haye, who saw off long-time British rival Dereck Chisora in his last outing in July 2012, was due to fight Manuel Charr in June - but that clash was shelved when Haye suffered a hand injury in the build-up.
Fury's last outing had been in April when he fought he stopped the former world Cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham in the seventh round at Madison Square Garden.

By Gareth A Davies, telegraph.co.uk Haye sustained the cut and was taken to hospital for treatment after sparring on Friday night, leaving fans of the bout, which was due to take place at the Manchester Arena, and the opposing team, deeply angered.
Mick Hennessy, Fury’s promoter, was “looking at all the variables – dates, venues, Sky Box Office” as the multi-million pound fight between the two heavyweights, with world title implications, was called off.
“Tyson and his uncle Peter the fighter’s trainer are very upset, annoyed and frustrated,” Hennessy, Fury’s promoter, told told Telegraph Sport. “Tyson would not have been sparring a week from the event, so close to the fight. We wouldn’t have taken the risk. If he was sparring without a headguard, that is beyond belief at this stage. That wouldn’t have happened with Tyson.
“Tyson would not cancel a fight under any circumstances. We’d have to drag him out it. We are looking at all the variables, the dust needs to settle, we are trying to cover every option. I believe this fight should happen. We genuinely believed Tyson was going to do a major job on Haye, and then go on and fight for the world title.
“This is a crazy situation, getting an injury this close to the fight. Tyson was in the best possible shape physically and mentally for this, nothing could have been better. That’s why I would like to see this fight happen.”
Adam Booth, Haye’s manager and trainer, told Telegraph Sport: “We are working hard on a rescheduled date with the venue and Sky.”
A statement from Hayemaker Promotions on Saturday morning broke the news: “The cut above his left eyebrow occurred in round two of sparring on Friday night and required six stitches by a plastic surgeon at St Thomas’ Hospital. Because of the gravity of the cut, these stitches will now remain in place for five to seven days.”
“Unfortunately, after being properly assessed, Haye was left with no choice but to postpone his fight with Fury. He is currently waiting on further medical assessment to determine the extent of the postponement.”
Haye said: “Gutted isn’t even the word. Mentally, I’m on the floor at the moment. I’m devastated most of all for my loyal fans, my family and my team.”
Haye and Fury were both hoping victory would set up a fight with Wladimir Klitschko, who is due to defend his world titles against Alexander Povetkin in Moscow on October 5.
Sky Sports declined to comment on the situation on Saturday.
It is unclear what will happen to the undercard world title contests involving Scott Quigg, due to fight for the vacant World Boxing Association super bantamweight crown against Yoandris Solis, and Andy Lee, scheduled for a World Boxing Council silver middleweight title fight against Domenico Spada. The cut above his left eyebrow needed six stitches, which have to stay in place for five to seven days.
"Gutted isn't even the word. Mentally, I'm on the floor at the moment," said the former WBA heavyweight champion.
Haye is awaiting further medical tests before setting a new date for the Manchester bout.
The 32-year-old also pulled out of what should have been his previous fight, against Manuel Charr on 29 June, because of a hand injury sustained in training.
Fury reacted to the news by telling followers on Twitter: "Sorry for everyone who bought tickets and hotels. Haye's excuses are boring. He doesn't want to fight me!"
Haye's last fight was his knockout win in an all-British bout with Dereck Chisora in July 2012, a meeting sparked by the brawl between the pair at a news conference in Munich in February 2012.
Hayemaker Promotions said that "after being properly assessed", Haye was left with no choice but to postpone the Fury fight.
"I'm devastated. I know injuries and cuts are part and parcel of our sport, but this doesn't change the feeling of disappointment and sadness I'm experiencing right now," Haye added.
"Even when everything seems to be right on track, sometimes life throws you a curveball. I will somehow have to try and make the best of this horrible situation. But, right now, I'm in bits about what has happened."
Three days ago Haye had taunted 24-year-old Fury ahead of the bout by insisting his sparring partners would beat his fellow Briton.
Fury would have put his unbeaten record on the line at Manchester Arena with Haye being the bookmakers' favourite, having lost only two of his 28 paid fights, most recently against Wladimir Klitschko in a world heavyweight unification bout in 2011.
Fury, who beat American Steve Cunningham in April to move to 21 fights unbeaten, turned down a bout against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev that could have earned him an IBF world title shot against Klitschko in order to fight Haye.

David Haye has pulled out of his heavyweight showdown with Tyson Fury in the MEN Arena in Manchester next Saturday – although the physical evidence of a deep cut along the Londoner's left eyebrow may just sooth the frustrations of the 20,000 fans who had sold out the venue inside 24 hours.
His promotional company, Hayemaker Boxing, said the fight had been postponed indefinitely "due to a deep cut suffered during the final spar of training camp". No date has been set for a rescheduled meeting between the two most exciting heavyweights in the country but, if the damage is as serious as claimed, they will do well to meet this side of Christmas.
Fury's promoter, Mick Hennessy, initially offered no comment, and there is an outside possibility the fight might be shelved altogether.
The cancellation is a major setback to the world title ambitions of both fighters. Haye, a former WBA champion, hoped victory would lead to a chance to challenge again for a world belt, against Vitali Klitschko; Fury reckoned he was in line for a shot at Vitali's brother, Wladimir, who owns the other three versions of the championship.
"Gutted isn't even the word," Haye said. "Mentally, I'm on the floor at the moment. I'm devastated most of all for my loyal fans, my family and my team, as well as Tyson Fury and his team.
"I know injuries and cuts are part and parcel of our sport, but this doesn't change the feeling of disappointment and sadness I'm experiencing right now. "Even when everything seems to be right on track, sometimes life throws you a curveball. I will somehow have to try and make the best of this horrible situation. But, right now, I'm in bits about what has happened."
His publicists issued a photograph of the injury, and added: "The cut above his left eyebrow occurred in round two of sparring on Friday night and required six stitches by a plastic surgeon at St Thomas' hospital. Because of the gravity of the cut, these stitches will now remain in place for five to seven days.
"Unfortunately, after being properly assessed, Haye was left with no choice but to postpone his fight with Fury. He is currently waiting on further medical assessment to determine the extent of the postponement."
When we spoke on Thursday, Haye, 32, could hardly have sounded more upbeat.
"I'm fitter, faster, stronger than I've ever been," he said. "I feel ready to explode."
He revealed his trainer and manager, Adam Booth, had employed the best sparring partners money could by in the American knockout specialist Deontay Wilder, the durable Polish contender Mariusz Wach, who last year lasted the distance with Wladimir Klitschko, and the 6ft 9in British heavyweight Richard Towers.
"Adam wants the environment in the sparring to be way more intense, way more dangerous than it is when I actually get in the fight," Haye said.
"They've hit me with some big, big shots. I managed to stay on my feet, but it has been harder than any other training camp I've had."
It was not immediately apparent which or any of the three sparring partners was responsible for the cut, but he will not have been the most popular person in Haye's Lambeth gym this weekend. Source: www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/sep/21/david-haye-pulls-out-tyson-fury-fight |
